Miss Kendall Update

Sorry I have been so limited in my blog updates lately. But with a baby at home with a cute face like this I'm sure you can understand.

If we can ever get the nap thing figured out I promise I'll do more updates for everyone soon.

In the meantime please keep track of my Picasa page as I do tend to upload new photos there much more often.

Hailey and Kendall

Not really sure what the two girls are looking at, but they are enjoying spending a little time together on the floor. Hailey is a good watch dog and anyone that wants to get close to Kendall has to pass a sniff test first.

Miss Kendall is also starting to like having the dogs and cat around. I think she especially likes Hailey as she's pretty easy going and so protective.

Some overdue details of our baby!!!

So yesterday I put up a picture of me and our new baby without putting in any details of the fact that we even had a baby. Wow, am I really behind on updating this blog!!

Kendall Ellen Smith was born on October 16th, 2008 at 3:09am. She weighed 8lbs 5oz and was 21 inches long.

She has a huge amount of hair and is just the cutest most wonderful thing I've ever seen in my life. (Biased yes, but I don't care.)

Mom is also doing extremely well and yet again proved to me why I am the luckiest man on the face of the earth with how well she did with the labor and just how she is coping with the natural worries of being a first time Mom. With Xan I have NO concerns about it. She is so determined to tackle it like any other challenge in her life and she is succeeding. Together I don't think there is anything we can't do together. I truly am blessed.

I promise to keep this a bit more updated over the next months as I know I'm going to be excercising my new camera a lot with this little beauty.

A much needed update.....

Well this update won't be all it should be as it's just been too long since the last update and I don't have a clue what to post. So let's just take the things as I think of them....

Little Buddy is definitely starting to get into fighting weight. I mean that more about her activity than her size, although Xan is starting to show a bit more. (She looks adorable!!! Those of you not near by will have to take my word for it.)

We went to see Batman: Dark Night last weekend. AWESOME flick if you haven't seen it by the way. Little Buddy didn't think too much of the visuals (apparently Xan's popcorn blocked the screen most of the time) but she LOVED the subwoofers in the theater. She was moving and dancing up a storm. We learned another valuable parenting lesson: babies, like puppies, do not like loud noises. Hopefully we haven't created another thunder storm freak like we did with Liberty.

All in all the baby is doing wonderful and so is Xan. Our birthing classes are doing well, but I need to remember to practice my breathing more often. Ok, I have to practice it more than once. Xan is doing good with it by doing it in the shower and stuff. We do well in the class together so I think we'll be ok.

We did see "the birthing video" in class this week. It's not the scary one they used to show that was filmed in the 70's or something, but it was graphic enough. It was actually a relief to see it as the teacher let us know that it was a very typical pregnancy and that all the stuff we see on TV is very, very rare. I think we're gonna be just fine.

What else.... We got the painting of Liberty and Hailey that we had done by the art teacher in Xan's school. I need to take some pictures of it this weekend and I'll post one here. It's very cool. We got it for Grampa Kent for his 90th birthday a couple of weeks ago. He seems to really like it.

Ellen is coming out for Xan's shower in less than a month. Xan is going nuts with excitement about being able to see her Mommy and to show her how cute she looks all pregnant. I'm happy for the two of them as I feel like my family has been able to experience all this coolness and now Xan gets to share it with a bit of hers as well.

Not really sure what else to say. It has been a busy summer with a lot going on in general and then all the stuff with the baby. But I'm not sure right now what else is excited to talk about.

We had a decent time at Clam Festival this year. Our friends Blanche and Jim came up to watch the parade with us on Friday and spent the night. Their dog Jake hung out with Liberty and Hailey and showed what a crazy boy dog was for them. They weren't too impressed, but played well enough with him. Unfortunately Clam Fest was pretty much a rain out, but we had a good time and got some good hot sauces at one booth.

Well, gotta get back to other stuff. I'll try to post the picture of the painting and some other stuff later this weekend.

Later,

My wife the Formula 1 driver....

Well the title is a bit misleading. I'll admit it. But it got you to read this far.

So my lovely, pregnant wife's new way to exercise is to ride the beat up golf cart my Dad got for free (don't ask, he's just a wheeler-and-dealer) around the fields and have the dogs chase her. That gives the dogs exercise, but doesn't do much for her. Except of course when she gets it stuck in the mud and has to walk home!!
Haley loves it as she doesn't have to run all the time. She can get in the cart with Xan and together they chase Liberty around. Lucky for Liberty the cart doesn't go much past a walking speed so it's not much of a chase and Liberty can go do her own thing.

But hey, I still love her!!

Spoiler Alert!!! --- The Doc told us the sex of the baby!!!

So if you are one of those people that don't want to know what sex a baby is before they are born you'd better stop reading. I finally "caved" and let Xan talk me into finding out what Little Buddy was going to be last week. Honestly I was totally cool with it, but it was fun messing with her for the last 5 months. (Yeah, sometimes I enjoy a little internal humor, what can I say???)

So last Thursday we went to the doctor for the first real ultrasound. (We already had one for the down syndrome screening which came back good!!!!) This didn't carry the same excitement factor for me as the first one because I had seen it before. But.... that is a VERY relative thing. It was still AMAZING!!!

So we sat there for like 15 minutes looking at our amazing creation and the technician was pointing out all these parts of the baby. There is a femur, there is the lower leg, there is a hand or a foot. Every time she mentioned a hand or foot I would jump up and count the fingers and toes. 10 toes and 10 fingers. We're looking good!!!

They also took a look at the heart beat and even measured the rate and it was where it should be. The tech did mention that Little Buddy was moving around a lot in there. Xan said it's defintely taking after her at this point. But since there isn't a TV and a couch in there it's not really a far comparison. My kid would be bored and anxious with nothing to do too.

Anyway.... after a lot of looking at still pretty cool stuff we told the person we wanted to know the sex of the baby. She asked if we were sure and we said yes and she told us we were having a little girl!!!

I don't know if I squeezed Xan's hand first, or if she squeezed mine, but either way we were both very excited. I'll admit there was a tiny part of me being a father that thought having a son would be cool, but for some reason I think I've been wanting a girl all along. I can't really explain it, but it doesn't matter. I got her.

Unfortunately I couldn't get the pictures from the DVD off tonight, but I'll mess around with it this weekend and come up with something to share. There is a lot more detail this time then there was two months ago so you can see a bit more now.

So now Xan knows what to go shopping for so the real strain of holding her back kicks in. But so far we've been good so I doubt we'll have a real problem. From listening to our friends Tim & Ann it sounds like diapers are key anyway. So we'll keep blowing our clothing allowance on those for the time being anyway. (20 diapers a day Tim?? Really?? Taking after Daddy already!!)

Gotta run. I'll have more updates for you all later.

Little Buddies first day of sun!!!

Well sorry it's been so long since the last post. Been awful busy with a bunch of things and just didn't have any actual "material" to post. Obviously been a lot of developments with Little Buddy, but didn't have any fancy picks or such to put up.

Today I took the day off as Xan is officially on April vacation today. Turned out to be the best day of the year without fail!! My computer is telling me it's 77F here in North Yarmouth. Not sure it really got that hot, but it was definitely warm this afternoon.

Xan and I did some yard work and general cleaning out side to enjoy it. Got the picnic table and everything out in the driveway (yes, we're a little white trash there, but we don't have a real deck yet so bear with us) and then spent a bit of time laying out in the beach chairs enjoying the sun. Actually got so warm I had to go inside for a bit and take a nap as I was falling asleep and didn't want to wake up like a lobster this early in the year!!

Not much else to report. Little Buddy is doing very well. Mommy is also doing well and finally is starting to accept the fact that she's beginning to show. It's actually so cute as she's now wearing maternity stuff and it's nice to see her comfortable finally. I think with the spring / summer coming she's going to be missing her afternoon glass of wine, but I think she's going to make it as she understands there's a pretty good pay off at the end of this magical journey.

Gotta run. Will try to get the posts happening a little closer together in the future.

Guess what we saw........

That's right friends, we are having a baby!!! Let us introduce you to Little Buddy:

Xan and I are so excited. We found out back in January but only told a few friends and family. But now it's been 3 months and so it's time for the world to know!!

Xan is doing wonderfully and has only had a small bit of nausea and discomfort. She's just beginning to show (although she'll tell you she has felt huge for a long time) and looks adorable. People are definitely correct when they say pregnant women have a "glow" about them. Xan's got it!! (No, I'm definitely not biased.)

It's obviously much too soon for knowing the sex of the baby (another debate we have to settle by the way) and so we've taken to calling our bundle of joy "Little Buddy" after our friend Michelle that we refer to as "buddy".

We have a few additional screen shots from the first Ultrasound DVD on our Picasa site (link here) but it's pretty tough to grab and they are a bit grainy still. But let me just say that was probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen in my life. We had just heard the heartbeat on Tuesday and then had the first ultrasound on Wednesday. I couldn't think anything would have beaten how I felt on Tuesday after hearing that heartbeat but I was wrong.

I'm sure that the wonderful technician who did the ultrasound has seen it a thousand times, but we didn't care. We were like little kids on Christmas morning watching the monitor as she pointed out Little Buddy's arms and legs and then even the heartbeat. We could see the heart beating in there and then she was even able to measure it with the machine and confirmed that it was a good strong heart beat.

Our due date is October 9th and everything seems well on track. Xan is excited that she'll be able to wear cute maternity dresses during the summer, but I'm still knowing that the "damn humidity" will rear it's ugly head during the summer and make things "interesting" for me and the dogs. But that's fine with me. Whatever I gotta do to help out and get to my baby.

Stay tuned to the blog for more updates soon!!

Snowy backyard in Maine

Here are a few pictures taken yesterday (2-JAN-08) literally from my "office" window. If anybody still has a question about why we moved up to Maine just take a quick look at these pics and try to count how many other houses you can see in them. (The doghouse doesn't count.)

Ofcourse with a beautiful scene like this there are some draw backs. One it's a lot of snow to move around and two it's 3F this morning. Wow, is that cold!!

Oh, well, that's part of the deal. Checkout my Picasa page for a few more pics in this serious and also some pics of how we move some of that snow around up here in Maine.
